Where to stay in South Africa

Hotels

South Africa offers a wide range of accommodation options, catering to all budgets and travel styles. In major cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, visitors will find international hotel chains, boutique hotels, serviced apartments and business hotels, many with modern facilities including air conditioning, Wi-Fi and swimming pools.

Tourist regions provide a particularly diverse selection. In areas such as the Cape Winelands, the Garden Route and along the coast, accommodation ranges from guesthouses and bed-and-breakfasts to luxury lodges and beachfront resorts. In national parks and private reserves, visitors can stay in safari lodges or tented camps, ranging from simple, functional options to high-end properties offering guided game drives and all-inclusive packages.

Standards are generally good, though they can vary in more remote areas, so it is advisable to check recent reviews or book through reputable providers. Advance booking is recommended during peak travel periods, particularly in popular destinations such as Cape Town and Kruger National Park.

Camping

Camping is a popular and well-developed option in South Africa, with a wide range of campsites available in national parks, nature reserves and along the coast. Facilities in established campsites are generally good and often include electricity points, ablution blocks, kitchens and braai (barbecue) areas. National parks such as Addo and Kruger offer well-maintained rest camps, while private campsites and holiday parks are found throughout the country.

Camping is particularly popular among self-drive travellers, as it allows flexibility and access to scenic and remote areas. Many campsites can be booked in advance, and this is advisable during peak holiday periods and school holidays when demand is high.

Wild camping is generally not permitted in South Africa, especially in national parks and protected areas, due to safety and conservation regulations. Travellers are expected to use designated campsites or obtain permission from landowners where applicable.

Visitors should also be mindful of safety when camping, particularly in remote areas, and follow local advice regarding wildlife, security and fire regulations.
