To enter Uganda, visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of arrival. Immigration authorities will check that the passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
Passport and visa regulations are subject to change, and airlines may have different requirements. Information is correct at the time of writing; travellers should check with the relevant embassy or official sources before departure, particularly when transiting through a third country. We accept no liability for any inconvenience or loss arising from changes to these requirements.
Almost all foreign visitors require a visa to enter Uganda, including citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and all EU member states. There are a limited number of visa exemption agreements with certain countries, mainly within the East African region, but most international travellers must obtain a visa before arrival.
Uganda operates an e-visa system, and all applicants are required to apply online through the official Uganda immigration portal before travelling. Visas are no longer issued on arrival for most nationalities. Once approved, the applicant receives an authorisation letter with a barcode, which should be printed and presented at immigration on arrival, where the visa will be stamped into the passport.
An East African Tourist Visa is also available, costing US$100, which permits multiple entries into Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda over a 90-day period. This is a useful option for visitors planning to travel between these three countries.
A single-entry tourist visa costs US$50 and is valid for up to 90 days. A multiple-entry visa is also available at a higher fee. The East African Tourist Visa costs US$100 and covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for 90 days. Transit visas are available for shorter stays. Visa fees are non-refundable.
A single-entry tourist visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. The visa approval authorisation must be used within this period, or a new application is required.
Travellers transiting through Uganda without leaving the international transit area of Entebbe International Airport generally do not require a visa. However, those who need to pass through immigration or collect baggage may be required to hold a valid transit visa. It is advisable to confirm requirements with the relevant Ugandan diplomatic mission before travel.
Visa applications must be submitted online through the official Uganda immigration portal. Applicants are required to upload supporting documents, including a passport-sized photograph, a copy of the passport bio-data page, a yellow fever vaccination certificate and proof of accommodation or an invitation letter. Applications can also be submitted through Ugandan embassies, high commissions or consulates in the applicant's country of residence.
Visa processing times vary but are typically between 3 and 10 working days. Travellers are advised to apply well in advance of their intended travel date, as processing may take longer during busy periods or if additional documentation is requested.
